A phone lens accessory must align with a particular camera, not merely attach somewhere on the back of the phone. Look up the accessory's supported phone models and mounting method. A clip, a dedicated case and a threaded mount impose different requirements. Include the cost and bulk of any required case when comparing options.
Identify which camera the phone will use for the intended shot. Phones with several rear cameras may switch between them under certain settings or conditions. Read the phone and accessory instructions, then check the selected camera in the shooting application. An accessory over one lens cannot help if the application is using another.
Check the entire image
Use a simple test subject with detail near the edges as well as the centre. Examine the saved photograph at a useful size on another screen. Look for dark corners, uneven sharpness, reflections and unwanted parts of the mount in the frame. Do not judge the result only from a small preview while composing.
For a close-up accessory, consider the working distance. Can you position the phone close enough without blocking the light or disturbing the subject? For a wider view, consider what extra surroundings enter the frame. The effect needs to solve a real framing problem rather than simply produce a different-looking image.
Case thickness and the raised camera surround can affect how a clip sits. Check whether the manufacturer requires removal of the case and whether the clip interferes with buttons. Do not force an accessory against exposed camera glass or tighten it beyond the supplied instructions.
Decide whether you will carry the extra steps
An accessory adds mounting, alignment, cleaning and storage to a quick phone photograph. Try that sequence in the place you expect to use it. If your main subject appears briefly, the setup time may matter more than the optical effect. If you work at a table with a stationary object, careful alignment may be easy to accommodate.
Keep the supplied caps and a separate pocket for the lens so it does not share space with loose keys. Read its cleaning guidance rather than treating it like a phone case. A useful purchase is one that fits both the device and the way you take photographs; a universal-looking clip in a listing is not enough evidence of either.
